Celtic and Rangers have both been told that they have made a huge mistake by not signing a player who cost £1m who is now tearing up the Serie A.
Former Rangers striker, Lee McCulloch, said on PLZ Soccer that he was surprised that both clubs didn’t ‘battle it out’ for the signature of former Aberdeen midfielder, Lewis Ferguson.
Host, Peter Martin said [PLZ Soccer], “Do you remember what we’re talking about a few years ago when he was ripping it up at Aberdeen because I said on the show if I was Celtic or Rangers they should have signed him.
“They should have signed him for £1m, Rangers.”
McCulloch, “And Celtic. They both should have been battling it out to get his signature but it’s as if they didn’t fancy him at all.”
Could Lewis Ferguson have made it at Celtic?
At the time I don’t think anybody could have foreseen the impact the now Bologna player would have had in the Italian top flight.
In his first season at Bologna, Ferguson made 32 appearances and scored seven goals. He has followed that up this season with three goals and four assists in just 12 outings for the Serie A side. [Transfermarkt]
At the time he was available, Ange Postecoglou had a midfield that consisted of Callum McGregor, Reo Hatate, Matt O’Riley, Aaron Mooy and David Turnbull.
If Celtic had paid the £1m for him there was no guarantee that Ferguson would have got in ahead of any of those four and he most certainly would have spent the majority of his time on the bench.
There is no doubt the 24-year-old is a fine player. You don’t go to the Serie A and after two good seasons get linked with the likes of Juventus, AC Milan and Napoli for nothing. [BBC]
For £1m, he would have been a bargain but I don’t believe he would be enjoying anywhere near as much gametime at Celtic as he is at Bologna.
